The ferry sliced through the calm water, leaving a frothy white trail. Sarah leaned against the railing, the sea breeze ruffling her hair. The city skyline, a shimmering silhouette against the darkening sky, had always been a source of comfort for her. She breathed deeply, letting the salt air fill her lungs.

A small, water-stained envelope had been tucked beneath the door of her cabin. Her name, scrawled in an unsteady hand. It brought back a time she had buried deep. She thought about it now, the way it had been.

Opening the letter, she skimmed the words, feeling the gentle rocking of the boat and the distant cries of gulls. She felt no weight of the past. The letter felt inconsequential. She closed her eyes, and then tossed the letter over the railing and back into the sea.
